Liability Program

About the Program

The Liability Program covers claims made against the county for damage to persons and/or personal property purportedly caused by county employees and/or equipment. This program provides in-house claims adjusting and the recovery of money when the county has suffered a loss due to the actions of another. Claims resulting in litigation are handled by County Counsel. All personal injury claims and claims over a certain amount are sent to a private insurance adjuster for processing.

Claim Process

The public may file a claim for property damage and/or a claim for personal injury with the clerk of the Board of Supervisors.

Non-Employee Accidents

When an employee is aware of an accident on county property involving a member of the public, the employee shall fill out a non-employee accident report and submit it to County Counsel.
