Special Athlete's Day
About the Special Athlete's Day
Each year the Recreation Department teams up with the Kiwanis Club of Sonora and Sonora Sunrise Rotary, to host our annual Special Athlete’s Track and Field Day. The 2020 Special Athlete’s Day will mark the 46th annual event and it takes place the first Friday in May. This event is open to individuals with physical and/or intellectual disabilities. It is open for children in kindergarten through high school as well as adults of all ages. This is a fun filled event where athletes and their families and friends can enjoy a day of physical activities, celebrate each other, and build community. There is face painting, informational booths, fun field activities, and more. The Kiwanis club of Sonora joins us each year to host the softball and tennis ball throw events. The Sonora Sunrise Rotary club provides a delicious barbeque lunch each year for all the athletes, their families, and event volunteers. Summerville High School has hosted this event for the past 8 years and their students are a fantastic cheering section for the athletes. They do a great job of encouraging the athletes and praising them for their hard work.
Each athlete participating in the Special Athlete's Day Track Meet will be able to select up to two track events and two field events from the list below to compete in. All athletes will receive a ribbon for each event that they participate in. There will be ribbons issued for first through fifth place, all others will receive a participation ribbon.
