[ARCHIVED] Kevin Roy Wilson Convicted for Embezzling from Yosemite Chamber of Commerce in 2014

Sonora, California –– Tuolumne County District Attorney Cassandra Jenecke announced today that 59-year-old Kevin Roy Wilson, who previously plead guilty to Embezzlement, Forgery, and Identity Theft was sentenced on October 31, 2021 to 10 months in the county jail and 2 years of felony probation by Judge Donald I. Segerstrom. Assistant District Attorney Eric Hovatter prosecuted the case for the People.

In the beginning of 2014, Mr. Wilson was hired as manager of Yosemite Chamber of Commerce (YCC) and entrusted with access to credit cards and checks to make purchases and payments on behalf of YCC. Approximately a year after being hired, Mr. Wilson was confronted by YCC members after the YCC’s checking account was overdrawn by $1,700. Mr. Wilson denied embezzlement allegations and resigned. An investigation revealed that Mr. Wilson used the YCC accounts to pay child support as well as 42 unauthorized credit card cable/internet, propane service, clothing stores, hotel stays in Reno and Black Oak Casino, food, Redbox rentals and online transactions. In total, Mr. Wilson embezzled $13,215.55 from YCC.

The case was originally filed in December of 2015 and a warrant for Mr. Wilson’s arrest remained outstanding until he was arraigned on June 10, 2019.  A preliminary hearing was held in December of 2019.  In January of 2021, Mr. Wilson’s attorney declared a doubt about Wilson’s ability to meaningfully participate in his defense, which caused criminal proceedings to be suspended pending an evaluation.  Mr. Wilson was found competent to stand trial in May of 2021 and in August of 2021 he pled guilty to all charges against him.  No plea bargain was made with the Tuolumne County District Attorney’s Office.

The Tuolumne County District Attorney’s Office remain resolute in the pursuit of justice, even during the frustration of delays. We give great thanks to past and present YCC Board members for their dedication to seeking justice for the citizens of Groveland and the greater Yosemite Corridor. A restitution hearing is scheduled for December 2, 2021 for the court to determine the exact amount of money that Mr. Wilson will be ordered to pay YCC. Mr. Wilson will also remand himself to custody on that day.
