Letters of Support / Opposition

Instructions on Sending Letters of Support / Opposition

When sending letters of support or opposition, you can send them directly to the office of the bill author using standard mailing procedures. We highly recommend that you also send them to the committee where the bill will be heard using the Legislature Position Letter Portal. You can find this information by using the legislative tracking websites (an example here). Don't forget to edit the highlighted portions in the letter.

Keep in mind that you may need to change the recipient and address info on a template letter if a bill moves into a new committee. Double check the committee addresses using the links below.

You will need to register on the California Legislature Position Letter Portal. Once approved, follow these instructions:

  1. Click "Submit a letter."
  2. Select "AB" for an Assembly Bill or "SB" for a Senate Bill, and type the bill number.
  3. Select the "Session Type" (Most bills will be "Regular" session)
  4. Click "Search."
  5. Select the most recent "Bill Version Date" and click "Next."
  6. Click "Yourself" if you are submitting as an individual, or "Other Organization(s)" if you are submitting on behalf of a group.
  7. Select the Committee(s) where the bill will be heard and click "Next -> Select File."
  8. Select a "Stance" ("Support, Oppose," etc).
  9. Type in a "Subject" (e.g., "Opposition to AB xyz - whatever the bill number is).
